The Ugly Duckling is a literary fairy tale by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). The story tells of a homely little bird born in a barnyard who suffers abuse from his surroundings until, much to his delight (and to the surprise of others), he matures into a beautiful swan, the most beautiful bird of all. The story is beloved around the world as a tale about personal transformation for the better. The Ugly Duckling was first published on November 11th, 1843 with three other tales by Andersen in Copenhagen, Denmark to great critical acclaim.

威廉·格纳齐诺出生于1943年，属于欧洲经历了上世纪60年代学生风潮的“68年一代”，1977年他以一部描写文员生活的小说三部曲成名，他的代表作包括《收银员》（1998年）、《给今天的雨伞》（2001年）、《女人、住房、小说》（2003年）等，尤其是最后一部被称为格纳齐诺的自传小说。与其作品中的人物相似，作家本人也深居简出。据报道，他的业余生活就是阅读和散步，而这两个爱好正是他“观察人生”的最好方式。 格纳齐诺小说的特点是对日常琐碎生活的极其细致的描写，因此他的作品在一般读者中一向有“无聊”、“沉闷”的名声，然而在文学评论家眼中，他的小说却是以小人物为主角的“当代德国的心理历史”，出色地描绘出了“日常生活中可笑的荒诞”。
